Around the Q - Rob Fleming - Principal
We have had a great start to Term 4 with our Grade 8 students heading south for their annual camp opportunity. We split the cohort into two groups with one going the first half of the week and the remainder during the second. Our students were exceptional, and the amount of positive feedback staff received from the adults they came into contact with was something we as a school, and the students themselves, can be extremely proud of! Our students have a long history of stepping up when representing our school and the two camps further solidified our positive reputation within the wider Tasmanian community.
A huge thank you to the Grade 8 team who put together an engaging and inspiring program for our students to enjoy. Shout out to Mrs. Gibbons who has spent the best part of this year working behind the scenes to make this camp a reality!
As we head towards the end of the year our Grade 10 students have had multiple opportunities to continue their exploration of the world of work. Guest speakers have been providing insights into future career pathways and in the next few weeks our 10’s will be enrolling in their Year 11 destination. Choices for our students are larger than they have ever been with opportunities to attend either of the Colleges, alongside great courses running at our local High Schools. Students have many pathways open to them and at times this can seem daunting. As a parent there are opportunities for you to find out more. Keep an eye out for enrolment information coming home shortly and make the time to have conversations with your young person about the right next steps for them in 2026.
A useful resource for families can be found here: https://careerify.tas.gov.au/im-a-parent-carer/ as this can be a great way to help support a conversation about next steps, at what can be a stressful time.
Our Grade 10 team are working hard to support our students so please feel free to reach out for a conversation if you need to clarify anything about the process to transition them successfully into Year 11.
We have our 1500m events happening this Friday, 24th, and next week will see our whole-school athletics carnival running on Tuesday and Thursday, a slight change from what was previously advertised.
If you are intending to come and watch, please remember to sign in and out at the main office as a visitor to the school.
This term, our Grade 7 students are kicking off with a new unit in Science, Biology! They're exploring the fascinating world of food chains, food webs, ecosystems, and invasive species, learning how living things interact and depend on one another in nature.
One of the highlights of the unit will be building a food web, where students will discover how energy flows through an ecosystem and how each organism plays a vital role. They'll also get hands-on by creating an ecosystem in a bottle, a fun and interactive way to observe over the term how plants and microbes coexist in a closed environment.
Through these activities, students will gain a deeper understanding of the delicate balance in nature, and the impact humans can have on ecosystems.
In the later part of Term 3, students were working on a unit involving Pythagoras’ Theorem and Trigonometry. Upon completion, students moved on to Measurement, incorporating proportional reasoning and the use of scale, finalising with the construction of scale models of various structures. Some classes are still to complete this topic. However, all classes will be working on the Statistics unit.
This week, Grade 9 students have completed on-line PAT testing. This provides immediate feedback to both teachers and students, highlighting a student’s strengths and weaknesses. This facilitates teachers in providing better, more targeted work for the individual student.
Grade 8 HaSS students have looked into the world of
Business and Economics. Students had to come up with business ideas of their own and sell them to the class. The range of products and services they came up with showed that they are already developing enterprising skills. These varied from products for bike-riders to a lecture tour on the dangers of giving children phones too young. In this module they also learnt about the taxation system.
Next they looked at landforms and the ways in which they are valued. This has involved them choosing an Australian one, researching an Aboriginal dreaming story about its creation, gaining knowledge on how it formed geologically, its value to tourism and the impact we humans have on it.
This term in Grade 9 English we are looking at Australian texts, the first text being a picture book called 'The Rabbits'
by John Marsden and Shaun Tan.
The story is an allegory for the colonisation of Australia told by the perceptive of the indigenous Australians, using the concept of rabbits spreading and consuming the natives resources.
Students are learning how to interpret visual illustrations and simple text, learning about allegory and metaphor.
As their year winds down, our Year 11/12 students have been out and about, getting a feel for different career and education paths. They’ve visited TasTAFE, Family Day Care, and
Pets Now Boarding, learning about everything from training for trades to childcare and animal care.
They’ve also been running our school playgroups, building connections and picking up some great real-world skills along the way.
With their final weeks approaching, our senior students will finish up in early November. We’re proud of all they’ve achieved and excited for what’s ahead!

Term 4 will be the final time our Grade 10 students will be completing Health and Physcial Education at Queechy. This term students will be refining their skills in preparation for the Athletics Carnival. For the remainder of the year students will be focusing on dance and playing their favourite high school games.
In Health, students are learning on how to host a party or how to be safe at a party. It is all about ensuring safety measures are considered for others and themselves. They will learn how to do basic CPR and how/when to put someone in the recovery position. By the end of the unit, they will be knowledgeable on how to handle difficult situations at a party.
Mrs Gibbons' 9E class has been learning about the
Earth's Natural Cycles. Students have crafted a unique diorama to represent these vital systems.
- Rock Cycle
- Water Cycle
- Carbon Cycle
- Nitrogen Cycle
- Greenhouse Cycle
These hands-on projects helped bring science to life, showing how interconnected and essential these cycles are to our planet's health. The attention to detail and scientific understanding on display is truly impressive! Below are some photos of the amazing work that was created.

The recent Grade 8 camp to Port Arthur was an unforgettable experience filled with learning, laughter, and adventure. Over several days, students explored one of Tasmania’s most iconic historical locations while enjoying a range of fun activities and bonding experiences.
The highlight for many was the visit to the Port Arthur Historic Site, where students stepped back in time to discover Tasmania’s convict past. A boat trip to the Isle of the Dead provided a fascinating insight into the lives of those who lived — and died — at the settlement, giving students a deeper understanding of our state’s history.
Outside of the history lessons, there was plenty of excitement and hands-on fun. Students fed wild birds and wallabies, crafted their own wood-fired pizzas, and enjoyed friendly competitions and games on the beach. The group also visited Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, where they met some of Tasmania’s most beloved native animals and learned about conservation efforts.
The camp was not only a chance to learn outside the classroom but also to strengthen friendships and create lifelong memories.
A huge thank you goes to the dedicated staff who made the camp possible — Mr Edwards, Mrs Farrell, Mr Stone, Mr Byard, Mr Tepper, Mr Stewart, Mr Kearney, Mrs Antypas, Mrs Pooley, Miss Smith and Mrs Gibbons — for giving up their time to ensure the students had such an amazing experience.
The Grade 8 Port Arthur camp was a perfect blend of history, adventure, and fun — an experience students will remember for years to come.

This term in Salon on Q we have been focused on our clients. Students have been learning about the importance of interpersonal skills.
We have been practising effective questioning, client hair analysis and positive interactions during their time in our salon.

On Friday the 26th of September, the last day of Term 3, our SLB hosted an MND Big Freeze event at lunchtime. The 17 SLB members elected 17 staff and 17 of their peers to dunk with ice water.
The Big Freeze is a major fundraising campaign organised by FightMND, aimed to raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease research and supporting those living with the disease.
Funds raised from the BBQ lunch was donated to FightMND through Grade 10 student, Archie Payne's fundraising page. The event was a huge success, bringing the whole school community together.
If you would like to contribute further, please follow his link here https://support.fightmnd.org.au/fundraisers/archiepayne
On Wednesday the 12th of November (Week 5), the SLB will be hosting a World's Greatest Shave event at lunchtime in support of the Leukaemia Foundation.
Mrs Bent and the wonderful Hair and Beauty students will be showcasing their hairdressing skills on staff and students who are willing to participate.
Students have been asked to elect whether they would like to shave, chop or dye their hair (wash out). Permission letters will be sent home and they must be signed by a parent/carer in order to participate. There will also be coloured hair spray on offer which does not require permission. If any student would like to donate their hair, the minimum cut will need to be 20cm.
Please note, participating students do not need to fundraise.
The SLB have set up a Queechy High School donation page and have set themselves a $1000 fundraising goal. They will also host a BBQ on the day - all funds will be donated. If you are able to donate, they would very much appreciate your support https://www.worldsgreatestshave.com/fundraisers/queechyhighschool2025
